CS2
CS2's Retakes patch changed nothing about defusing. It changed how fast you reach your weekly drop.

Valve's November 4 CS2 update shortened Retakes freeze time and added instant defuses. Because Retakes pays XP by score and not by round, that is a drop buff.
Valve shipped a Counter-Strike 2 update on November 4 that touches three things: Retakes pacing, pet chickens, and the map scripting API. It left weapon balance and the competitive maps alone. Everyone picked up the same bullet, the one saying bomb defusal in Retakes now finishes instantly when there is enough time left in the round and no active utility remains to prevent the defuse.
TalkEsport, FPSHUB and skin.club all wrote it up inside a day as a clutch fix. I think they grabbed the wrong line. The bullet underneath it is the one that changes something for you, and it has nothing to do with defusing.

Valve's own store art for Counter-Strike 2, from the Steam app page where the notes went up. Steam dates that post November 4 while most outlets filed it as November 5.
Read both conditions again
The patch note has two gates and both have to be true. Enough round time left, and no active utility that could stop the defuse.
Think about when you actually swear at that animation. It is the molotov on the bomb with four seconds on the timer. It is the T sitting inside a smoke while you tap-defuse and pray. In all of those rounds at least one gate fails, so the animation plays out the way it did last week. The instant defuse only fires in rounds you had already won. Bomb clear, nobody left alive.
Valve also never said what counts as active utility. Does a CT's own incendiary still burning next to the bomb block it, given that it is active but preventing nothing? I have not found a test, and I am not going to guess at one.
The bullet nobody quoted
Valve also reduced freeze time and the round restart delay in Retakes, and I have not seen one outlet lead with it. No values published either way. The X account ThourCS2 posted 5 seconds of freeze and 3 seconds of restart, which is unofficial, so I would not build anything on it.
Sounds like a comfort tweak. It is not, because of how Retakes pays XP.
Premier and Competitive pay 30 XP per round won. That is round money. A round ending twelve seconds sooner earns you nothing extra. Retakes pays score times two, per the XP tables Zorex published on cs2central.gg in May and updated on October 11. Your score is the thing being multiplied, and score only accrues while you are alive and shooting, never while you stand around in freeze time. Cut the dead air and your XP per hour rises on its own. Valve did not have to touch the formula at all.
Deathmatch used to be the farm. Valve gutted it over two patches on May 7 and May 8, dropping the base kill score from 10 to 8 and capping a match at 75 base XP, down from 200. Zorex's tests show how blunt that cap is: scores of 798 and 723 both returned the same 75. Retakes already paid better per minute afterward. This patch widens the gap without listing one XP number.
What two hours of Retakes is actually worth
Your weekly care package needs Prime and one profile level, and a level is 5,000 XP. The weekly multiplier means you never pay 5,000 in raw score. The first 4,500 weekly XP arrives at 4x and the next 3,000 at 2x, which puts the level-up at roughly 1,375 base XP. Those thresholds are community-tested rather than published by Valve, and cs2central says so on the page.
At the 8 to 11.5 base XP per minute Retakes returned in those tests, 1,375 base XP is about two to three hours. Now take out the dead air. If a Retakes cycle loses ten seconds and live play runs 40 to 60 seconds, you land somewhere around 15 to 25 percent more rounds per hour. Twenty or thirty minutes off the weekly level-up.
I am doing arithmetic on someone else's tests here, so treat that as a shape, not a figure. It is still the only part of this patch that converts into an item you can price. Whether the two picks you take from the four offered are worth anything is a separate question, and the CS2 market tracker answers it better than vibes do.
Two things people get burned by. XP only counts on official Valve servers, so the community retake server you have had bookmarked since CS:GO pays zero. And an unclaimed care package gets overwritten if you level again, so claim it before you queue.

It still does not fix the lobby
The pacing complaints Valve answered came from a thread called "Retakes need serious improvements" on r/GlobalOffensive, written up by skin.club on May 26. The top ask was exactly this: less downtime, faster restarts, instant defuse when the round is already decided.
The second ask went nowhere. There is no auto-balance. One commenter in that thread put it as "3 Ts farming bots against 0 or 1 human CT all the time," and another said that after three games on a map "you can memorize all the CT spawns." Both are still true tonight.
Which produces a slightly grim result. In a stacked lobby, faster rounds mean the stacked side farms faster. The T player who ended up with three humans and a bot opponent now gets more of those rounds per hour, and so does their XP bar. The patch rewards whoever drew the good side of a lobby it still refuses to even out.
If you only change one thing
Bind your utility before you queue. Five seconds of freeze time is not enough to scroll for a flash, and since the October 6 patch put your grenade crosshair on screen during freeze time, that window is now where lineups happen. Flash and smoke on dedicated keys, and put molotov somewhere your thumb finds without thinking. The bind generator will write the config if you would rather not.
And stop reading Retakes results as a skill signal. The mode is unrated, it feeds nothing into your CS Rating, and half the people you kill are bots. It is a score farm with aim practice attached, which this week became a slightly better one.
