Counter-Strike 2's Biggest Non-Major Event Ever Started August 12 in Paris. s1mple Isn't in It.

The Esports World Cup 2026 CS2 event is running August 12-23 in Paris. Group stage is at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles; the Accor Arena hosts playoffs. The event relocated from Riyadh this year, and it brought the largest prize pool Counter-Strike 2 has ever played for outside a Valve-designated Major: $2,000,000. Thirty-two teams, four double-elimination groups of eight, top four from each advance. Today, August 16, is the last day of group play. Playoffs start August 19.

The defending champion is The MongolZ, who won EWC 2025. Most of the top teams are in the field. One very famous name is not.

What the Last Chance Qualifier told you before a match was played at EWC

The LCQ ran August 7-9 in Paris. Sixty-four teams fought through group brackets and a single-elimination playoff for four remaining spots in the main event. According to esports.gg, the four teams that qualified were BIG, 100 Thieves, K27, and JiJieHao. 100 Thieves secured their spot with a 2-0 win over 1win in the final round.

The teams that did not make it: Team Liquid, HEROIC, fnatic, and BC.Game Esports.

BC.Game was the CS2 story of the summer. The roster was built around Oleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev, the most accomplished player in Counter-Strike history, returning to active competition. With a five-nation structure and significant individual talent at every position, the team looked dangerous on paper. They played their first official match July 31 and continued into August, including a Proving Grounds Season 3 match against CYBERSHOKE on August 10.

They could not get through the LCQ. They will not be at EWC 2026.

This says nothing definitive about s1mple as a player. What it does say is that the LCQ's single-elimination playoff rewards practiced team cohesion over individual ceiling. One bad series and you're out. K27 and JiJieHao carry less name recognition than BC.Game on any ranking list, but they have played together long enough to execute under pressure in a format with no margin. That is what advanced them, and it is worth understanding.

The same applies to Liquid, HEROIC, and fnatic. Three organizations with genuine tier-one pedigree, none of them able to close the LCQ bracket. The format is unforgiving when a team's identity is still forming.

As of August 16, confirmed playoff qualifiers from group play include G2 Esports, GamerLegion, Team Falcons, and FaZe Clan, per Dot Esports. The remaining twelve of sixteen playoff spots are being decided today.

MOUZ enters EWC carrying momentum from BLAST Bounty Summer 2026 in late July, where they beat Team Spirit 3-1 in the grand final and Spinx earned MVP. Both MOUZ and Spirit are in the EWC field. Team Vitality and FURIA are among the other headliners. The MongolZ are defending their title.
