Valve cut the CS2 AUG's reload by 0.57 seconds and explained nothing. That was the gun's last real cost.

Valve's October 8 patch cut the CS2 AUG's reload from 3.77 to 3.2 seconds. After March's magazine rework, that was the gun's last real cost to carry.

Valve shipped a short Counter-Strike 2 patch on the night of October 8. Most of it is housekeeping: a ping icon for dropped defuse kits, a Desert Eagle sound event firing on the wrong frame, a buzzing soundscape in demo playback, clipping fixes on the Rush maps. One line is a balance change. The notes describe it only as cutting the AUG's reload time by half a second.

No reasoning given. No mention that it's the second buff to the same rifle in twelve months.

reskins.gg pulled the diff out of the game files, and Valve's number turns out to be the conservative one. The AUG's m_flDisallowAttackAfterReloadStartDuration, the window after you press R during which the gun refuses to fire, went from 3.77 seconds to 3.2. That's 0.57. The reload animation got swapped out at the same time.

0.57 seconds is nothing until you look at the ladder

Where the AUG sat before Tuesday night, using the long-running Steam community reload-times guide: AK-47 at 2.43 seconds, SG 553 at 2.77, M4A4 and M4A1-S at 3.07, AUG at 3.77. I'd normally not quote a guide that old, except its AUG figure matched the game file exactly right up until this patch, which is decent evidence the rest of it still holds.

The AUG was the slowest-reloading rifle in CS2 by seven tenths of a second over the next slowest. That's not a rounding error. It's about a full peek, and it's the reason the gun has always been something you hold an angle with instead of something you take into a retake.

At 3.2 seconds it's 0.13 behind the M4A4. Still last on the ladder, technically. No longer last in any way that changes a decision you make inside a round.

The magazine rework is what turns this into a real buff

On March 18, Valve killed the shared ammo reserve. Leftover bullets don't go back into a pool anymore. You drop the magazine, the rounds inside it are gone for the round, and you pull a fresh one from a fixed number of spares. Valve's framing on the Steam blog was that leftover ammo "is dumped back into an essentially endless reserve supply," and that "we think the decision to reload should have higher stakes." PC Gamer called it the biggest shake-up in years.

The AUG came through that patch with 30 in the gun and three spares, the same total ammo it always had. Community tables still argue about several weapons. They agree on the AK-47, AUG and SG 553 group.

Since March, pressing R costs you two things at once: bullets you can't get back, plus seconds you can't shoot. Valve has now cut the second cost by 15 percent on exactly one rifle and touched none of the others. The gun paying the steepest reload tax in the game dropped to roughly average.

My bet is this gets walked back, and the receipts are from 2019

The AUG has been through this cycle before. Valve ran a price-drop experiment in late 2018, put the gun back to $3,300 on March 13, 2019, and HLTV noted at the time that the pick rate kept climbing anyway. Then came the June 18, 2019 patch, which cut rate of fire and unscoped accuracy, followed by reduced scoped accuracy on April 10, 2020. That pair of nerfs is what buried the AUG for five years.

Both are now mostly undone. The October 2, 2025 CS2 patch improved AUG and SG 553 scoped control, reducing inaccuracy and recoil. This patch handled the reload. Whatever made an M4 the automatic CT default a year ago is weaker on both counts.

Honest caveat: the animation was replaced in the same patch, so I suspect this began as an art fix with the timing values dragged along behind it. Valve shipping a meta shift by accident would be entirely in character. Doesn't change what it does to your games.

What to change this week

If the reload was why you skipped the AUG, that reason is basically gone. Buy it on the long holds where the 3x scope already earned its keep, Mirage palace and Ancient mid being the obvious ones. What made it miserable on retakes was the 3.77 window, and that window is now close enough to an M4's to stop mattering.

Reload discipline is still worth more to you than the buff is. Four magazines total means a habit of tapping R at 22 rounds leaves you dry-firing in a 1v2 later in the half. March added a fill-level indicator under your ammo count for this exact problem, and a lot of people have never spotted it, because their HUD colour goes invisible against light surfaces. Check your HUD values in the settings generator sometime before a session rather than halfway through one.

On the market side: be sceptical of anyone telling you AUG skins are about to run. The 2019 meta did lift them, but that took months of pro adoption, not a single patch note. AUG skins are the thinnest of the CT rifle markets, so they swing hard in both directions on very little volume. Pull the float and volume history on the market tracker before you commit money to a hunch about a line in a MISC patch.
