CS2 shows your grenade crosshair in freeze time now. Memorised insta-smoke lineups are over.

· 5 min read

Valve enabled grenade crosshairs during freeze time on September 30. The insta-smoke stops being a memory test, and your wall-seam lineups stop mattering.

Valve shipped a Counter-Strike 2 update late on September 30, 2026, which is why roughly half the coverage dates it to October 1. It was around 700 MB per skin.club's writeup, and most of that weight went into clipping fixes for the new Rush rooms. The crosshair section had five bullets. One of them is worth your time:

"Enabled grenade crosshairs in freeze time for insta-smokes (just hold a grenade attack button)."

The CS2 NEWS account on X relayed the full bullet list the night it went live, and every outlet I read framed that line the same way, as Valve enabling insta-smokes. That framing is off, and the difference is not academic.

You could already throw the smoke

An insta-smoke is a smoke you get into the air during the opening instant of a round, while freeze time is still ticking, so it lands before anyone on the other side gets a look through the gap. The mechanic is ancient. Hold the throw button through freeze time, let the round start, release, and the grenade leaves your hand at about 0:00. None of that was blocked before September 30.

What was blocked was the grenade crosshair. CS2 draws a separate crosshair when you have a nade out, and until this patch it refused to render while freeze time was running. The throw worked fine. You just could not see what you were aiming at until the round had already begun, by which point adjusting is pointless.

So the throw is unchanged. What is new is that you can watch yourself line it up.

Confirmation is the expensive part

Before this patch, an insta-smoke was a memory test with no feedback. You parked your crosshair on a wall seam or the top corner of a crate, held the button, and learned about two seconds later whether you were right, usually by watching the smoke bloom somewhere humiliating. Spawn in a different slot and that same wall seam sends the same throw several feet off target.

Reference points also rot. Cache returned on April 28 as a rebuilt map and has been patched repeatedly since: Valve pulled the lamp self-boost near Shroud at the end of April, then removed the Outside A boost on August 4. Each of those edits quietly broke somebody's memorised pixel. A grenade crosshair you can see during freeze time does not care, because it shows the aim the game is actually going to use rather than the landmark you hope still matches it.

The ceiling on insta-smokes has not moved at all. The floor dropped a long way.

What to do before your next Premier match

Save your current crosshair code first. The import format changed again in this update, and scope dot scale and colour are now encoded inside it, so a code you paste from a teammate who last updated in August will not carry those fields. If you want to rebuild rather than convert, our settings generator writes the config out properly.

Then bind your smoke to an actual key. Holding the attack button only helps if you can get the grenade out instantly and the same way every time, and scrolling to slot 4 under pressure is not that. The bind generator will produce the line if you do not want to hand-edit autoexec.

Last, load a private server and confirm the grenade crosshair draws during freeze time on each map you actually queue. The setup guide at cyber-lab recommends two or three days off ranked before you trust a changed crosshair, and not touching sensitivity in the same week. Boring advice, still correct.

That one comes from cyber-lab's guide to configuring the new Static Quadrant style and freeze-time smokes.

Two days of a crosshair that lied

skin.club reported that Valve rolled the update back shortly after launch because clients were crashing, and that matchmaking went briefly unavailable before service came back. If you got dumped out of a queue on September 30 and spent the evening reinstalling drivers, it was not your PC.

On October 2, Valve followed up with a fix for grenade crosshair rendering at 3 pixel thickness, plus an update to the workshop convars whitelist. Thickness 3 is not some exotic choice; plenty of people run it. For about two days, the one feature this patch added was drawing wrong for them. If you tried freeze-time lineups on September 30 or October 1, decided the crosshair looked untrustworthy, and went back to your wall seam, go try it again.

Who this is actually for

For the professional scene, close to nothing changes. Teams have had their round-start utility written down and drilled for years, and a crosshair they can now see four seconds earlier teaches them nothing they did not already own. I expect zero tactical difference at the top of the game.

Around 15,000 Premier rating it reads differently. Insta-smokes are one of the few parts of Counter-Strike where twenty minutes of homework buys a repeatable advantage in the opening round, and the reason most people never bother is that practising them is dull and failure is invisible. That excuse just got weaker. Learn two per map, one per side, confirm them during freeze, and you own something that does not depend on your aim being good on the night.

One caveat I will be honest about: I have no numbers on what a landed insta-smoke is worth in round win rate at mid Premier, and I would not believe any figure quoted at me this week. The mechanical argument holds up without one.
