CS2
CS2 can finally mark a dropped defuse kit. The player who most needs to ping it is dead.

Valve's October 8 CS2 patch added a ping icon for dropped defuse kits. Markers are disabled while dead, so the kit holder still cannot mark it.
Valve shipped seven lines of patch notes for Counter-Strike 2 on October 8, 2026. Six are housekeeping: a Desert Eagle silent reload sound, buzzing audio in demo playback, clipping fixes on the Rush maps, plus the usual localization and stability lines. The seventh reads "Added a ping icon for dropped defuse kits."
Almost every write-up I found led with the AUG reload buff and parked the kit icon underneath it. FPSHUB and TalkEsport both ran the AUG as the headline. I would flip that order. The AUG buff helps a rifle most people never buy. The kit icon turns up in every post-plant round you play from here on, and it does not quite work the way the coverage implies.

That is Valve's store art, because Valve shipped the October 8 notes with no screenshot of the new icon at all.
Five seconds against forty
A defuse kit costs $400, only CTs can buy one, and it does exactly one thing: your defuse goes from 10 seconds to 5. The bomb runs for 40 seconds after the plant.
Put that on a normal retake. The Ts plant with 34 seconds left, you trade two of them on the way in, and you are standing in site with 11 on the clock and no kit. You lose that round. Ten clean seconds plus the walk to the bomb plus the half second you spend realising nobody has a kit is more than 11. Give the same player a kit and the round is boring. Nothing else in the CT buy menu swings a round that hard for $400.
Then there is the detail that makes the ping matter at all. You cannot hand a kit to a teammate. There is no drop for it. A kit only reaches the floor when the person carrying it dies, so the kits lying around a site belong to your dead teammates, usually sitting in the exact spot where the fight went wrong.
This was built for people playing alone
In a team with real comms the kit problem was solved years ago by somebody saying "kit on short, left of the box." Five players who practise together do not need an icon.
Premier solo queue is not that. On a normal round you get one person on mic and everybody else on a push to talk key they never press. You could already put a marker on a kit before this patch, but it came out as the same generic ping you use for a smoke or a rotate, so a teammate across the map had no idea what you were pointing at. Now the marker says defuse kit. Tiny change to the game, and the first thing in months that lets a silent lobby pass on information it was previously losing.
No blog post, no trailer. One bullet in a Misc section.
Dead players do not get markers
Here is the hole nobody wrote down. Markers are team only, bound to MOUSE3 by default, and they do not work in spectator mode. Put that next to the fact that kits only drop when their owner dies, and the one player who knows precisely where that kit is, the person who was carrying it, is dead and cannot ping a thing.
The icon only helps if a living teammate walks past a body and remembers to click the wheel. Two habits worth building, both free:
Holding a kit and not the last CT alive? Drop a marker under your own feet before a risky peek. If the peek goes badly, your team gets the location without anyone having to type.
Walking past a kit you have no time to grab? Ping it anyway. A marker survives the noise of a retake better than a callout does.
The economy version of the same idea: stop buying five kits on anti-eco rounds. One marked kit on the floor covers two or three unbought ones, and that is $800 back into rifles.
Go check that MOUSE3 is still yours
This is the settings consequence, and it will catch more people than it should. Plenty of configs rebind MOUSE3, usually to jump or to some jumpthrow script. If yours does, you have no marker key, and the October 8 patch did precisely nothing for you.
Open settings, go to Keyboard and Mouse, find Place Marker. If it is blank, or sharing a key with something you press mid air, fix it before your next match. Prefer it off the mouse? bind "x" "player_ping" works and leaves the wheel alone. Our bind generator will write that out with the rest of your keys, and the settings generator is there if you are rebuilding a config instead of patching one.
One thing Valve left ambiguous
The note says a ping icon was added. It does not say whether the icon appears on its own when a kit hits the floor in your view, or only once somebody pings it. None of the outlets covering the update answered that, and I am not going to guess from a single bullet point.
Finding out takes two minutes. Load a private server with a friend, buy a kit, die, and watch whether the icon shows up before anyone touches the wheel. If it does, Valve buried something much larger than a Misc line. If it does not, you are back to depending on a teammate who can be bothered.
